The new edition of the Science Festival kicked off in La Rochelle on September 29th, under the theme 'Savory Flavors.' Coordinated by La Rochelle University, it aims to spark public curiosity and introduce science in its various forms.
This year, the La Rochelle Marina is partnering with the university to explore the biodiversity thriving beneath the pontoons. On Saturday, October 10th, an interactive workshop day will be held at the Bureau du bassin des chalutiers, on the Esplanade Tabarly.
The workshop 'Life Under the Pontoons,' led by Angélique Fontanaud, Pierre Rideau from the port's Environment service, and Vincent Hamani, a researcher at the LIENSs laboratory of La Rochelle University-CNRS, will help understand this ecosystem hosting algae, fish, and crustaceans, as well as the role of port areas for living organisms.
“"Beneath the pontoons, there is indeed a true ecosystem where algae, fish, crustaceans, and sometimes rare or surprising species coexist."
Beyond this workshop, the public can learn about the journey of migratory birds, the world of microbes, and observe the Sun using telescopes. The La Rochelle program covers diverse topics such as biodiversity, oceans, food, health, environment, digital technology, heritage, and astronomy.
Events like discovering nudibranchs, studying ocean acidification, observing plankton, examining sentinel gulls, and research on marine ecosystems are also featured. The Science Festival aims to foster exchanges between scientists and citizens.
The Science Festival in La Rochelle is coordinated by La Rochelle University, in collaboration with numerous laboratories, associations, and local partners.
