The Jean-Lacouture Prize, established in 2021 on the initiative of Alain Rousset, annually honors a personality whose literary work aligns with the legacy of the Bordeaux-born reporter. This year, the jury selected Pierre Haski for his book La fin d’un monde, published by Stock.
“"I try here to decipher what we are experiencing today."
The jury praised the book's profound depth and the journalist's sensitive writing, noting its alignment with the Lacouture tradition of great storytellers of our times. Pierre Haski, born in 1953 in Tunis, is a French journalist known for his reporting from South Africa, the Middle East, and China for Agence France-Presse (AFP) and the newspaper Libération. He co-founded the news website Rue89 and served as president of Reporters Without Borders from 2017 to 2018. Since August 2018, he has hosted the Geopolitics segment on France Inter.
In his book, Pierre Haski analyzes the global transformations he has covered as a journalist over the past fifty years. He deciphers the end of a world that emerged from World War II, characterized by imperfect institutions and often-disregarded legal frameworks, and questions the dawn of a new one: will it be one of power struggles and authoritarian systems, or will we have the wisdom to build a better, more equitable, and open world?
The Jean-Lacouture Prize, chaired by Hubert Védrine, aims to recognize literary works, biographies, investigations, or journalistic endeavors that resonate with the memory of Jean Lacouture, a reporter native to Bordeaux.
