Led by the SIVOM du Born, the rehabilitation project for the Parentis-en-Born waste disposal center, inaugurated on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, emphasizes reuse before sorting and disposal. The goal is to give objects and materials a second life.
The user journey includes three stages: reuse, sorting/recycling, and finally, disposal as a last resort. Dedicated reuse areas feature a 'donnerie' for reusable objects and small appliances, a 'matériauthèque' for usable materials from construction sites, and the 'Végé’tri' for plants. Repair and reuse workshops, such as Repair Cafés, will also be hosted.
The site now offers six sorting streams at the top of the quay: metals, wood, sports and leisure items, household items, cardboard, and incinerable waste. At the bottom of the quay, a 100 m² building houses thermal DIY and garden equipment, electrical and electronic waste, and specific small streams like batteries, ink cartridges, lamps, neon lights, and fire extinguishers. Specific areas are also designated for diffuse hazardous waste, textiles, mineral oils, plaster, rubble, and green waste.
User reception has been enhanced with simplified circulation, better-identified areas, a stabilized zone for green waste, and improved rainwater management. An access control system using license plate recognition regulates visitor numbers, and the site is designed to prevent co-activity between users' vehicles and collection trucks. Staff also benefit from new, adapted facilities.
The waste disposal center also serves as an educational hub, featuring a pedagogical hedge, a 'Zero Waste Garden' space with composting facilities and educational elements, and a mural. Reused materials were incorporated into the construction, and the quay's base was built using 4,633 tons of clinker ash from incineration.
This overall investment of €2,044,212 excluding tax, supported by the Landes Department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, reflects an evolution in public waste management services towards giving a second life, better sorting for recycling, and minimizing incineration.
The waste disposal center is not just a drop-off point. It should also help residents better understand what happens to their waste and encourage them to change their practices.
