Klima Week returns for its 6th edition, from October 2nd to 11th, 2026, under the theme of biodiversity. This event, taking place throughout the Basque Country, will feature around a hundred varied activities such as walks, workshops, conferences, exhibitions, and shows. The goal is to invite both young and old to discover the richness of life and better understand its essential role in our living conditions.
Beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the collapse of biodiversity represents a major challenge for the Earth's life balance. The Basque Country Agglomeration Community, its member municipalities, and partners have chosen to highlight this phenomenon with the unifying message: 'Biodiversity: An age-old ally, essential for the future of our territory!'
Biodiversity encompasses all living species, their natural environments, and the interactions between them. Ecosystems play a crucial role in crop pollination, soil fertility, water and air quality, as well as our food and health. It is therefore indispensable to our lives.
Despite its importance, life is collapsing at an unprecedented rate. According to the IPBES, nearly one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction, and 75% of terrestrial environments have been significantly altered by human activities. Recent studies indicate a decline in flying insect biomass in Europe of around 70% in twenty years, attributed to habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation of resources, invasive species, and climate change.
In response to this situation, Klima Week aims to inspire wonder at the diversity of nature, foster understanding of the essential services provided by natural ecosystems, and present concrete solutions for preserving life. Nearly 100 events are planned across the entire Basque Country, including botanical walks, site visits, participatory workshops, nature projects, screenings, conferences, exhibitions, and shows, targeting all audiences to encourage action for a more resilient territory.
