The City of Rochefort has felled 23 trees on Cours d'Ablois, a necessary operation for site safety and preparation for a historical landscape redevelopment project.

Between Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the City of Rochefort removed 23 trees from the northern part of Cours d'Ablois. This operation is part of a project to enhance this historical perspective, aiming to strengthen the tree heritage with the eventual planting of 103 new trees of various species.
Cours d'Ablois, connecting the Vieille Paroisse to the Hôpital de la Marine, is an emblematic historical area. The redevelopment project aims to restore the landscape perspective from the 18th century, while increasing the presence of nature in the city and anticipating the effects of climate change.
Among the felled trees are 11 box elder maples from the central avenue, which were aging and the disappearance of some specimens had weakened the historical alignment. Their replacement will allow for the gradual reconstitution of a coherent tree structure.
The situation of the 12 large-leaved lime trees, planted along the former maternity hospital, is different. Following the demolition of the building, these trees became more exposed to winds, revealing structural weaknesses. An assessment conducted on April 10, 2026, by the firm MD Expertise, highlighted risks of tilting and cracking, justifying their removal for user safety.
Tree safety assessment relies not only on their appearance but also on the condition of their roots, trunk, and main branches. The City has initiated a comprehensive review of its squares and public spaces, aiming to better connect these areas, promote soft mobility, and enhance the presence of nature in urban environments.
The redevelopment of Cours d'Ablois is a first step. By 2028, 103 trees of various species are planned for replanting: 11 honeylocusts, 12 Chinese pistache, 12 Mediterranean hackberries, 8 Hungarian oaks, and 60 Spaeth's alders. These plantings, some of which will be about six years old, will establish a more diverse vegetation structure and emphasize the landscape perspective.
