ADATEEP 24, the departmental association for public education student transport in Dordogne, has initiated its new safety awareness campaign for school transport at Jean Moulin college in Coulounieix-Chamiers. These operations, organized annually in partnership with ADATEEP and its collaborators, aim to enhance the vigilance of young users. Alain Marty, President of Périmouv’, highlighted the importance of these actions, stating that Le Grand Périgueux, through Périmouv’, manages 44 school routes and transports over 2000 young people per year.
The 40th ADATEEP campaign for 2026-2027, titled "Disconnected or Hit?, the choice is quickly made," emphasizes the risks associated with inattention. Olivier Deffarges, deputy coordinator for road safety at the Dordogne Prefecture, explained that this message aligns with road safety and accident statistics. He noted that middle schoolers are often invisible without a yellow vest and that using a mobile phone maximizes the danger.
Sixth-grade students are welcomed by ADATEEP volunteers for workshops. A first theoretical session in a classroom uses educational videos to encourage interaction with the young people. Topics covered include: greeting the driver, fastening seatbelts, placing bags at one's feet, arriving 5 minutes before departure, remaining visible, and paying attention to one's surroundings.
Good practices for using school transport are detailed: staying visible with a reflective vest from home to boarding the bus and vice versa upon return, being present at least 5 minutes before departure, having a transport pass, waiting for the bus to stop completely while staying away from the road, and waiting for the bus to move away before crossing the road after disembarking.
A second, more practical part allows students to discover the signage and safety equipment outside the bus, particularly blind spots. They also learn to identify interior safety features such as the fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, window-breaking hammers, and emergency stop buttons. The exercise includes simulating an escape from an overturned bus.
A real-time exercise simulates exiting the bus calmly within 30 seconds, with a specific procedure for students along the aisle and those by the window. Students at the back exit last.
