As summer gently recedes, the Dune du Pilat is embracing its autumnal colors, inviting visitors to rediscover its unique landscape. The Grand Site is offering a series of free nature activities and events, curated by its mediators, to allow the public to explore, understand, and preserve this remarkable ecosystem.
Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or seeking an original outing with family or friends, the autumn program provides diverse experiences. Among the highlights, a birdhouse building workshop, organized by the association Vivre Mon rêve, will take place on Sunday, October 4th, from 2 PM to 5 PM.
Family storytelling walks, suitable for ages 6 and up, are scheduled to share a poetic moment at the summit of the Dune. These walks, lasting approximately 1.5 hours, will be held on Friday, October 23rd (Halloween theme) and Wednesday, October 28th, from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM.
For the more active or contemplative, nature hikes are available. A 4-hour ridge hike (for ages 10 and up) is scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, from 9 AM to 1 PM. A 2-hour sunrise hike will take place on Tuesday, October 20th, from 7:45 AM to 9:45 AM.
Guided walks of the Dune, lasting about 1.5 hours including the ascent, will reveal the landscape's secrets: sand origin, flora and fauna, human occupation, and preservation challenges. These walks will occur every Sunday in October and November, from 10 AM to 11:30 AM. A thematic walk on '4000 years of history' is offered on Thursday, October 22nd (10 AM-12 PM), and a sunset walk on Thursday, October 29th (4 PM-5:30 PM).
Observation posts with telescopes will be available on the Dune's crest during weekends and autumn school holidays, allowing visitors to observe the Banc d'Arguin and migrating seabirds. A special event dedicated to 'Bird Migration', organized in partnership with the Banc d'Arguin National Nature Reserve, will be held on Saturday, October 17th, from 2 PM to 4 PM.
All these mediation activities are free of charge. Registration is mandatory for certain walks and hikes, with limited spots available. Bookings can be made online. It is recommended to wear walking shoes suitable for sand, warm clothing, and bring a water bottle.
