As part of an international cooperation initiative, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and GIP Littoral welcomed a delegation from Cameroon's South Region from October 5th to 9th, 2026. This collaboration is part of the 'Sustainable Coastal Development' call for projects launched by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Following an initial mission to Cameroon in April 2026, this week of exchanges aimed to share methods and tools for integrated coastal management. The challenges faced in Cameroon, particularly around Kribi, related to port development, urban growth, tourism, and coastal erosion, resonate with those in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
The delegation, including the President of the South Region Council of Cameroon, the Vice-President for Cooperation, the Director of the Wood and Biodiversity Office, and the Director General of the Ocean Development Study Mission, learned about the region's coastal policies and local strategies.
Several technical visits were organized: natural space management at the Dune du Pilat, port development in Bordeaux-Bassens, adaptation to coastal erosion in Soulac-sur-Mer and Talmont-sur-Gironde, oyster farming and maritime training in Mornac-sur-Seudre and Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, port management on the Île d'Oléron, and coastal policy governance in La Rochelle.
These exchanges highlighted the importance of shared governance, better understanding of coastal dynamics, and long-term planning. The goal is to identify experiences adaptable to the specificities of Cameroon's South Region and to showcase the collective expertise developed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
