As of November 5, 2026, France is raising its avian influenza risk level to 'moderate', a decision prompted by the detection of the virus in migratory wild birds in neighboring countries.

The decree classifying the risk level for highly pathogenic avian influenza is issued following the identification of an infection dynamic in migratory wild birds in neighboring countries and aims to strengthen surveillance and prevention measures.
The measures applicable at the 'moderate risk' level include housing poultry in a closed building. For waterfowl intended for Foie Gras Production (PFG), from the fifth week of age, the maximum density in a closed building is 6 PFG/m2.
Derogations are provided for specific cases, including PFG housed in light shelters under certain density conditions, or for geese in specific zones. Establishments raising broiler chickens, guinea fowl, and turkeys outdoors may also place these animals in a reduced run without prior prefectural authorization under certain age and building size conditions.
Regarding feeding, it must be protected from access by wild fauna and stored in external silos or closed bags. The distribution of feed and drinking water to poultry is carried out in closed buildings, except for specific derogations for certain establishments.
